But you are not limited to asycnhronous NRZ encoding - you can use any encoding you like, optimized for speed/size as you like. There are numerous encoidings that can tolerate >>10% clock uncertainty. Have another PIC decode the data and send it out using its UART. Maybe with a FIFO inbetween. For electrical isolation use an IR LED and a TSOP receiver (OK, abit slow) or IRDA.
