Pick up partner at 6:20. At desk before 7am. Leave work at 3pm. Home before 4. 4) I have 2 rail stations within walking distance (one is about 1.5km from home - 800m as crow flies GPS). Journey is about 1hr on train with about 20min walk, or 25minute bus ride (which costs additional) from "at work" station to actual office. Makes whole trip (including time required to get to station 5min early to avoid missing train...) about 1hr40min. Taking cost in to account as well, 1 week of commute is $30 canadian in fuel (toyota corolla does 6l/100km) per week + parking @ $25 per week. Carpool partner pays $35 per week. Equivalent rail tickets would be $60 per week. In essence, my commute costs me the wear-and-tear/insurance/maintenance on the car only, I save about 1 working day (8 hours) per week in time not spent on trains. I am also not restricted to train schedule (one-way service to city in morning - 3 trains, and one way service return in evening - 3 trains). Not all that bad considering how far I live from office.
