AIUI they had only just lifted off when they lost power, and the instructor
figured there was enough room to land, but they went through the hedge at
the end of the runway.

The "exciting" bit of this was it was announced on the news as "another air
crash in Oxfordshire" as this happened about 6 weeks previously.
