Then you can go wrong with Microchip MPLAB C18. Its free student version is completely functional (after expiration, it is still full functional other than the extended mode and some optimizations). It can be used to develop any application, including commercial applications. You can try it out and you can buy the compiler if you need the extra feature or need the added feature or support. One thing good about MPLAB C18 is that you just need to pay once for the compiler, the updates are free.
