I have mixed feeling about off-topic posts, but IMHO _any_ kind of discussion is appropriate for [OT] as long as it's conducted according to the accepted rules (written and unwritten). So far, this thread has not turned into a flame war, is being conducted in a reasonably polite and calm manner, and is not a two-way conversation. PicList has many topics which are of little interest to me, but I learned to filter them out. Instead of trying to limit other people's freedom of expression, just mark the whole thread as "read" and move on.
