It's been a few years since I was in it, but small electric aircraft have been using 9v rechargables for some time. It seems there are a couple of different kinds, some are a stack of button cells, others are a pack of very slender cylindrical cells (maybe AAAA?) the cylindrical cells can easily put out 2amps but the button cells have much higher internal impeadance and won't put out more than ~200-300mA. 

The hobby seems ot have moved on to LiPo now, but if memory serves I had good experiance with sony and the ones sold under the Sears brand.
