The new 44-pin demo board uses PIC16F917. Why 16F917? Because currently MPLAB only integrate the support for PICkit 2 debugging and programming for PIC16F917. There is nothing much inside the demo board (similar to the LPC demo board). But it is good to get this board if you want to try the PICkit 2 as an ICD2-like debugger under MPLAB.
