I thought he just assembled it there, since the wiring etc was hidden in his shoes. Not sure how hard it is to mix a batch of nitro in the toilet, but either way the recent scare is quite plausable. You wonder why he just didn't bring a walkman with him, that gives you an excuse for the wires (headphones) and batteries, rather than hiding them in his shoes. This was 1994, so having screwdrivers or pliers with him was possible. If not, I've used nail clippers to cut wire before.
