In the US, the smaller parties are shut out due the the 'first post the post' voting system. Australia's preferential voting does give small parties a chance. (That said, Australia is basically a two party system as well.) On the flip side, ratbag parties like One Nation (anti-immigration, less tax, longer jail sentences etc) who do gain enough votes to win at FPP still lose because the majority dislike them.
