I also got similar problem with IPX packets.( The stack i used
was modified version of Microchip stack to fit it into my device. )
I debugged with ethereal ( now wireshark) and found that the
system is hanging after an IPX packet. so modified the code
to drop IPX packets.

why don't you drop IPX packets instead of reseting the device ?

Another problem i found in microchip stack is, it pings only for
standard packet
size, if you change the ping packet size. It won't ping.
