Its not as difficult as it looks. I am also a relative newby, but found all the resources on the internet invaluable. Start with something easy like a PIC 16F84A. Programmers for these are easy to build, and cheap to buy. Check out www.quasarelectronics.com. If you dont feel like buying from the Uk, Im sure there are similar online stores near to where you live. If all else fais - try Ebay. Find a basic IDE like the one from here: http://www.mikroelektronika.co.yu/english/product/compilers/mikrobasic/index.htm Basic is probably teh easiest way to get your feet wet in this hobby. Once you are familiar with program structure and how the PIC operates, you can look at C and Assembly. a simple programmer is this one: http://www.covingtoninnovations.com/noppp/ which should get you going.
