I'm in the very early stages of a potential project: I have some software that uses LPT1 and LPT2 as general purpose IO to control various external widgets. What I want to do is create a PCI card that looks like a couple parallel ports to the PC. Then, rather than exposing simple high/low signals to the outside world, a PIC with CAN abilities will sit on the PCI card and translate the signals to the parallel ports to various CAN messages. Those messages will then control the external widgets rather than the simple high/low signals. So... my question to the list: does anyone have any design notes or schematics on PCI card based parallel ports? I realize the parallel port is somewhat old-tech, but it is already well integrated into the PC software which is fairly specialized. Any info is appreciated!!
