In this case, the current system is meant for "laboratory" with a somewhat controlled environment. They have asked about light industrial applications. Ethernet over power lines doesn't seem like a good mix when you could have single and multi-phase motors kicking on and off nearby... Hadn't considered optical though but, the "clear-line-of-sight" restriction would also be abused in a light industrial setting...
