At least, all too often the "do it yourself" proficiency doesn't include documenting how you'd want someone else to do it. Of course, off in the other thread I was about to mention that I though engineering jobs (and engineers) had become too specialized. We used to hire software engineers; now we want experts in implementing VoIP/SIP in Java under VxWorks on MIPs 7k... Not only does that make the job market generally nastier, but I think the GENERALITY of engineering was part of what made it intellectually attractive...
