James,
I used to run a rather large discussion list on my server, having
several hundred people. I most certainly did not send anyone email who
didn't sign up for the group, yet I got periodically added on these
black-lists. We attributed the problem to people who used the "Junk"
button on their email client to get rid of email they didn't want,
perhaps even instead of unsubscribing. We also had people who were mad
at our discussion list because it wasn't very politically neutral, so I
gained a lot of problems with that.
