Anything that requires forces generated by ankle joint motion to retain balance isn't "really" 2 legged walking human style but is using a platform for support to generate balance forces from. We do this too, but it's not an essential and fundamental part of walking. Test: Balance on your heels and walk around - or on "tip toes'. Most people will find this entirely doable albeit awkward and uncomfortable. (You can easily pull a muscvle due to the unaccustomed posture). You can still easily walk up and down stairs and over uneven surfaces. Less awkward is to fit very short "stilts" under your shoes so you make essentially point-contact with the surface. You can still walk well. Robots like this one can't. ref Matthew McMahon -- http://www.piclist.com PIC/SX FAQ & list archive View/change your membership options at http://mailman.mit.edu/mailman/listinfo/piclist
