I've got a load of vmWare virtual machines that I use for cross-compiling. Means I don't have to have a separate HDD partition for each cross-compiler I want to run, and it also stops them clashing with each other. Sure it's a little slower than running them natively, but it's worth it for the time saving - no more problems with one cross-compiler needing gcc 4.0 and another wanting 3.3 - just create another VM and match the versions up for that compiler. Someone actually asked vmWare about their policy on people writing VM building tools - ISTR their response was something to the effect of "we've got no problem with that, have fun".
