Hate to show my age again but back in early 60's I made my own resist and= modified a dipping ink pen! (no not a quill) I would draw traces on a polished laminate I got somewhere. Then I made s= ome etchent. Did a project for telemetering temperature & altitude from a model rocket= for my high school science project. I was just helping my friend who was building the model rocket. He won first prize I think. Anyhow I remember building a flip/flop counters using CK722 (I think) bot= h metal and plastic transistors. I made etchent (something Chloride or from my chemistry lab) Then I drilled boards and soldered parts. Had to really clean the board with baking soda because I only could get a= cid core solder. I did build a heithkit VOM meter years later. Later I could purchase resist pens, then did 2x or 4x tape on mylar then = had a photo lithographer ($30) reduce and make a negative for me. I would dip a board into UV resist coating, let dry expose to sun with ne= gative, then slosh in Ferric Chloride, wash in water/baking soda solution= , then drill, assemble and solder parts. Just last week I found in my attic an old 4x hand taped mylar from back i= n the 70's. Threw it out. The point is unless you are dirt poor, and/or have all the time in the wo= rld, why would anyone want to do it the old way? I have gotten one board done in three weeks from a local pc board house f= or less than $50 Can't do any complexity. I can do perfboard with hand wiring faster and better. Hopefully techniques have improved and cost far less than what I paid.
