Wouldn't that be the right time to hook up a scope and check out what's
going on -- in either case? :)

I have still two quite old (and admittedly not very good) analog DMMs. I
haven't felt a need to take them out of the drawer in a loooong time --
besides just wanting to hold them and feel some nostalgia ...
