Big companies have dedicated (global) sourcing department/teams. Small companies normally do not have dedicated sourcing teams. Most companies will not go through Digikey/Farnell/RS/Mouser for volume production. They are only for prototyping or very low quantity production. Avnet/Arrow/Future/.. are big global distributors. There are problems with these companies though. Sometime the FAE know a bit of everything yet they really know nothing about the product lines they carry. You will have also local distributors. Sometimes you can also direct do business with the manufacturers like Microchip.
