I will guess this is the problem. You should at least patch your XP
Profession CD to SP2. Microsoft calls it Slipstream. You can
slipstream Windows XP with SP2 and Post-SP2 Security Hotfixes.
An example:

And since now you have a broken Windows installation, the easist thing
is to back up the data and format the drive and then reinstall Windows
XP Professional.
