I just happened to have a setup (one PC with Hyperterminal, one PC with Bray Terminal, null modem cable) so I tried the above and it works. eg Alt 001 sends the single character 0x01. The trick is you have use the numeric keypad. Can't send 0x00. Tried bigger numbers like Alt 255 and Alt 127 but it seems to get confused with anything over Alt 126. Might be the setup of Hyperterminal - like they say, truly horrible for uC work.
