>> Bring back the 6809 !!!! >> 'Nicest' processor ever built :-) Agreed, it was a wonderful part. We designed it into a factory data collection and management application right from its first introduction before IBM PC existed. The hardware contained a 6809 with its companion 6829 memory mangement unit accessing 2MB of memory and the sofware used every bit of it. The units ran unattended 24/7 for years in some really hostile environments without problems. Eventually we ported it to the PC when they became a commodity. Reliability was never the same. A Motorola engineer once told me that the 6809/6829 was designed as a platform for IBM's first PC but the Intel parts were chosen instead. I don't know if this story is true but if so, the world might be very different today if IBM had taken the other path.
