As for hammerhead74000's design--an Appkit (Cocoa) GUI shell running command-line tools is how Xcode operates as well and is a great, flexible and extensible design. If he hadn't already created it, I would have suggesed he look as using teh Netbeans or Eclipse IDEs which run cross-platform on the patlforms he mentions.
