I said easiest, not fastest.
This chip will do up to 1 Mbaud, and I've seen sustained read throughput of 85kbytes/sec from the SD
card. 
You can also use SPI to the chip if you need faster rates- I think it will run at up to about 7MHz
SPI clock rate.
