This link points to Lapis Lazuli - known as a gemstone for maybe 6000 
odd years but a name unfamiliar to many people. The paint colour 
"Ultramarine"  = "from over the sea" was until the 1830's made only by 
crushing Lapis Lazuli and mixing with binders. Unlike other pigments 
it does not fade with time.
