Exactly... the thing is that this is a protocol suite, and the lower layers you probably are not really that interested in, as they are being handled by the hardware. Add to this that the Ethernet protocol is a CSMA/CD protocol (multi-master, so to speak) and that to put that on a serial link, you need to add another protocol to the mix (like PPP or SLIP) -- which probably more muddies the waters than clarifies things.
