Does anyone have any hints on laser rangefinder design? I'm looking into making a laser rangefinder for a project I'm working on. It doesn't have to be anything fancy and resolution of a meter or two would be fine. A maximum range of 100m would be acceptable. All I really need to know is how far a 2m scale plane is from the ground so I can stop it from crashing when it's at low altitudes. Ultrasonics don't have the range to track it above tree height. I've roughed out some designs involving measuring the flight time of a laser pulse. My worry is that the obvious circuits for timing this pulse require some pretty high speed electronics. Is anyone aware of a good/easy way of doing it? Is there a totally different approach I'm overlooking?
