The entire X-Port device fits inside the RJ45 connector. You supply power and it gives you a network port on one side, a serial port on the other and a web server in between. The installed software can be tweaked to fire off email alerts when some event occurs on its programmable I/O pins. There are other solutions from other manufacturers as well.
