Only way I got it to work reliably over a range of printers was
to buy and read the IEEE 1284-2000 spec.  Online documentation was
incomplete or hinky.  I wasted a lot of time using the "free" info.
If your time is valuable, spend the $100 and buy the IEEE spec.
