Well, the best part about installing to /usr/bin is that on most distros that's a path already in your path variable, so you won't have to do anything extra to access the tools. Of course if you do install to a "non" standard area it's very easy to add any path to your path variable (although how exactly depends on what shell you use, open a new terminal and type "ps", you'll likely see either bash, csh or tcsh as an entry, google for that name with "adding path" and you should find what you're looking for).
