Hi Herbert, Thanks for the reply, As I am new to Linux I would like to organise things in a neat way that's why I asked the question. I will install it on the /usr/bin directory. The Sun site does give me instructions on how to install it but not the preferred location. The other question is how do I make the JAVA tools accessible from any directory? i.e. if I want to run a java program I don't need to be in the tools directory, similar to PATH in windows. For an experienced user the install procedure isn't too bad, but for a person newer to Linux it can get damn confusing. I'm not sure if SUSE has RPM support (it probably does), but even if it does, go for the second one (without the "rpm" string in it). Running that will basically ask you to agree to the license, and then extract the files into the directory you specify. > and in which directory should I install it(I was thinking of the /opt > directory). Anywhere you want! Of course, some places are a better idea then others. If you want all users to be able to access the SDK I'd install in the /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin area. Personally I simply follow, step by step, the instructions sun provides. I can't find the specific package your trying to install on Sun's site, so I can't give you a link to their instructions. Go to Sun's site and search for the relevant install instructions.
