Buffered variants lose their fine linear capabilities, are generally 
not quite as low power and either have a more restricted supply 
voltage range and/or do not allow of very low supply voltages. 74C14 
makes quite a usable basic SMPS controller and will run on somewhat 
less than the 3 volt supply that the data sheet guarantees.
