I think you'll find that particular 'scope clock uses a analogue circuit
for the curved parts of the characters.

It recovers the time and date from the phase encoded data carried on the
carrier of BBC Radio 4 on 198kHz in the UK.  Some of the pictures show
the eye diagram of the recovered phase shift signal.
