If you want to DIY a full featured ignition and injector controller than look no further than Megasquirt.  http://www.msefi.com
 
For a basic distributorless ignition controller, take a look at Megajolt Lite Jnr.  This uses the Ford EDIS igntion contoller which means you get a robust, commercial unit at the heart of your system which can run stand alone (with fixed advance) should the controller fail.  The micro used in this project is a small Motorola part, but controlling the EDIS module is simple and well documented so it would be releatively trivial to use a PIC if you really wanted to.  http://www.picasso.org/mjlj/

I would like to build a PIC controlled ignitition to replace the old crappy stuff in a veteran VW bus. There are a bunch of existing products but I want to make it myself for the fun part (of course). I did some Googling but couldn't really find any good info, can anyone point me in a direction or can give some ideas?
 
What I really would like to do is a complete ignition and injection controller to get rid of the carburator as well. It would be really great to be able tune both the ignition and the injection curve. :)
