One of my favorite people to listen to is Allan Watts. I very much like what I heard him say once that I think is relevant here. In one of his talks he makes a distinction about how people behave when they are acting with human emotions, like greed for instance. And he talks about how an army of people who are greedy would act. They might go into a country, kill a bunch of the men, and then return home with the other people's stuff and women. He compared this scenario to one where the people are motivated by abstract ideals or moral superiority or beliefs. They have contempt for the others because they are a different religion or because they are communists and so on. In this war they go another country, kill all the men, slaughter all the women and children, burn the houses, villages, crops, everything they can. There is cruelty and torture. For me this distinction is very clear. I'm sure I didn't do Mr. Watts justice in my explanation, though.
