I did read a newspaper article where someone with (an obviously limited) knowledge of physics tried the red-shift as a defence. Apparently when offered the speeding ticket for a speed that would cause a visible shift in the light (apparently *many* thousand km/h) the unlucky driver decided to pay costs & the original ticket. Given the poor standard of newspaper reporting I would take the article with a fairly large grain of salt..
