"open source" has become a pretty religious subject for some people, and I would expect a fair number of would-be-commercial SW vendors to be somewhat offended by the implication that they are less credible just because they're not open source. There are certainly plenty of abandoned or nearly-abandoned open-source projects that are effectively no more useful than abandoned closed-source projects. It seems that SW writers expect open source to lend them credibility, while what is really needed is that "commitment" someone was talking about. Too man people use source availability as an excuse to get out of their commitment... (most recently, I submitted a fair set of bugs (with patches) against AVRA, the Atmel-compatible AVR assembler for unix. No response from the project owners... Sigh.)
