Can be done yes, but why reinvent the wheel?

Plus, with serial debugging you can't debug when you use that serial
port, a big issue for me since my of my projects have used one.

I'm not saying the ICD is the only way to go, but considering how easy
it is to use, and how integrated it is with MPLAB it's by far the best
solution for me.
