Actually, slave mode is probably easier to implement in software than master
mode (of course, the hardware peripheral makes slave mode very easy, so I
wouldn't recommend implementing it in software).

Master mode is only easier when you can be sure (which is true, in this
case, I agree) that there is only one master on the bus.
