Jason and John - that was the problem :-)

Clearing EECON1,CFGS solved the problem and it worked perfectly.

That will teach me to take almost an 8 month break from programming PICs and
trying to work in a workshop which is currently 38 Degrees C (with the
aircon on !!!)
