Here in Oz chipping for pets is optional but strongly recommended.
It's pretty cheap and most pet owners do it. Why? Because there's a
central registry where they keep your phone number on file. If your
pet strays and is picked up by anyone they'll bring it straight back
to you. To me that's a pretty good reason to chip a pet.

Next step - homing devices for pets. Now _that'd_ be handy.
