I have done 115k2 with an 18F252 at 40 MHz without problem, but that was with an FT232BM so the actual 115k2 path was only centimeters (but it did include optocouplers). Are you sure your peer is right on frequency? No excessive (asymmetric) edge delays in the cable or the drivers? Not a software problem (maybe overruns?) Make a simple test program: echo everything you receive straight back (set the PIC for 1 stop bit, PC for 2 stop bits). See if that still gives errors => probably a hardware problem (including baudrate miscmatches). No errors => you probably has a software problem.
