OK I did, and you're right RES can now be used in absolute mode.  This did
not used to be the case, and I wasn't aware that had changed.

However, in DS33014H on page 115 section 4.56.2 it says "in non-relocatable
mode, label is assumed to be a program memory address".  This means that
even the new revised version of RES can not be used to allocate variables in
absolute mode, which is what the original question was about.
