I was told that at least in the case of the Circuit Cellar column that when BYTE was purchased by McGraw-Hill Publishing their legal staff was very nervous about the magazine publishing anything that suggested a reader modify their computer, build any electronics that had even the slightest chance of harming someone, damaging anything, etc. That pretty much killed all the parts I liked.
