The best way to go about that *isolation* they speak of, is to use an
optocoupler to seperate the PC side from the DMX side and implement a
seperate powersupply for the DMX side of your circuitry. This way you can
bombard the DMX side with just about any reasonable overvoltage without
frying your USB port.
