I've NEVER had a problem with it.  Others have had chronic problems
with it.

In the final analysis, I think it's like a decoupling cap.  Sure, your
circuit might work on the bench without it, or maybe even in the
field without, and maybe 100% of the time, but saving $.03 for
one resistor isn't worth the trouble that NOT having it in could
cause.  Put the resistor in and be grateful you never had a
problem with it and learned the easy way.
