I'm not sure how much of that is myth. I read online today that having 1 in 5 miles straight to use as a runway is a myth, but they did NOT say that using them as runways is a myth. Especially on the east coast, older overpasses, I've seen steel doors into the part that holds up the road overhead, so apparently there's some sort of room under there. Not so on modern overpasses, I think the shelter thing went out of favour. Some things you see in fiction are not so fictional either. In the novel form of "andromeda strain", major manchek dials the binary of 222 to start the alert. As a military kid, I had seen the signs that did say "in case of fire dial division 222". In the 70's I tried dialing 1-101-1110 from an on-base phone, and it was answered by a female voice "Military Emergency".. I decided to depart the premises at that point :) Same number tried from a civillian phone went nowhere. -- > Feel the power of the dark side!
