Ah, well in the united states, the purpose of the university system is to turn out university professors, not "professional successes." Read some of our trade journal whining about the lack of Engineering PhD applicants, for instance. No one quite says "there's a decline in PhDs because an PhD is neither necessary or sufficient to do "research" anywhere but a university", but a couple people come close.
