Don't get me started on University finance. My "F-ing Prestigious" Ivy-League Alma Mater has talked me into contributing significant $$$ their way each year, and is constantly working on MORE, but there are tantalizing bits of nonsense that appear to show up: 1) tuition is a relatively minor party of income or expenses. (so why does it need to keep going up?) 2) A major budget item is "financial aid" (so what, they charge students more so that they can loan it back to them so they can afford to come to school??!) 3) Financial aid of course has it's own wealth-redistribution policies. All in all that's probably a good thing, but it's surely hell on the large segment of the population that doesn't qualify on the basis of "financial need" but whose lifestyle is surely dented by $60000/year of expenses. ("So what, we'd pay less if we HADN'T skimped and saved for 20 years to send our kids to college?") (been there, did that. When the figure was a lot lower, of course...) Grr.
